WINTER SUMP PUMP READINESS
Is your sump pump ready for the next thaw?
SafeStep checks the pump, float, pit, visible discharge and battery backup before heavy rain, a power outage or rapid snowmelt exposes a problem.
Serving Kingston and Eastern Ontario since 1995.
A sump pump is easy to forget until the water starts moving
A pump may turn on during a quick test and still need cleaning, maintenance, discharge correction or a better backup-power plan. Winter runoff, freeze-thaw conditions, heavy rain and rapid snowmelt can force the system to handle a large amount of water in a short period.
A SafeStep readiness check gives you a clearer picture of the visible system before the next weather event puts it to work.
What we check
Pump and float
We confirm that the primary pump and float operate during the visit.
Pit and lid
We review the visible condition of the sump pit, lid and surrounding area.
Visible discharge
We look at the visible discharge route and check valve for issues that may need attention.
Battery backup
If a backup system is installed, we review its visible condition and operation.
Written next steps
SafeStep provides a written checklist identifying visible concerns, maintenance items or work that should be quoted.
The readiness check covers visible and accessible components. It is not a guarantee against flooding and does not replace further investigation where site conditions require it.
What happens if the power goes out?
The primary sump pump may stop when the home loses power. A battery backup is intended to keep pumping for a limited period, but the right equipment depends on the existing pump, battery condition, property and expected water demand.
SafeStep can assess the current setup and quote a backup system suited to the property.

Common questions
Can a readiness check guarantee that my basement will not flood?
No. The check identifies visible conditions and items that may need maintenance, repair or further assessment. No sump system can eliminate every possible cause of basement water.
Why consider a battery backup?
A battery backup is intended to keep pumping for a limited period when the primary power supply fails. The appropriate system and expected runtime depend on the pump, battery and site conditions.
Can SafeStep tell me whether I qualify for Utilities Kingston assistance?
SafeStep can discuss the proposed work and help you understand the next step, but Utilities Kingston determines eligibility, covered work, available funding and approval.
What should I include with my request?
Include the property address, what equipment is currently installed, any recent pump or power issues and when the system was last tested or serviced, if known. Photos are helpful but optional.
